Matthew Lillard and Scream’s Bill Whirity are teaming up for an NFT project to create collaborative films in the sci-fi, horror and fantasy genres.
Actor Matthew Lillard, who is best known for his roles in films like Scream and Scooby-Doo, returns to the horror genre with a new tech-focused project. Lillard has starred in a variety of film and television projects, from drama series like good girls to romantic comedies like She is all that. The majority of Lillard’s Hollywood experience is on camera, but he also has some directing and producing credits.
According to Deadline, Lillard and writer/director Bill Whirity are teaming up for Midnite Movie Club, an NFT (non-fungible token) project described as a “decentralized movie studio.” Essentially, the organization will be made up of members of the public and other fans who, using blockchain technology, will also have a say in the films created by the company. Midnite Movie Club will focus on horror, sci-fi, action/adventure and fantasy films. Midnite Movie Club has already selected its first project — a vampire film titled let them die which is expected to go into production this summer. Going forward, members of the decentralized autonomous organization will not only decide which films to make, but can also contribute to major production decisions, from casting to costumes to marketing.
NFTs are having a moment since early 2021, when the collection of blockchain-backed unique digital objects became more common. Some NFTs have sold for impressive sums, while others remain skeptical of the artworks’ ultimate value. Midnite Movie Club is a hugely creative way for Hollywood to jump on the bandwagon, as well as further engage viewers in the creative process behind some of their favorite movies in tandem with a veteran actor like the Scream star.
