Overlord director Julius Avery’s Gantz live-action film

Jules Avery was set up to direct a live adaptation of the Gantz manga series for Sony Pictures. Based on the manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku, Gantz debuted in 2000 and lasted until 2013, totaling 37 volumes. There was an animated adaptation of the series that ran for two seasons in 2004 and a CGI film called Gantz: 0 was completed in 2016.

The series tells the story of high school students Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, who, after their death in a train accident, find themselves in a semi-posthumous “game” into which they are forced, along with a number of other people recently. dead, to hunt down and kill aliens armed to the teeth in all manner of futuristic technologies, weapons and objects. News of the adaptation comes just months after Oku said in an interview with Crunchyroll that there would be no new anime or live-action adaptation for. In the interview, Oku says that the company in question will likely hold the rights until 2024 after signing the contract in 2020. Below is a quote from that interview:

A Hollywood company has the right to adapt ‘GANTZ ‘ at this time, and unless they give us the rights back, we won’t be able to do an anime or live-action adaptation of the manga. This is the type of Hollywood contract; they have all the adaptations including anime and live-action except manga … [It will take] About four years older [to regain the rights].

Anime has become a popular staple in Hollywood, as many see it as a big market in the years to come, although live-action adaptations are rarely successful. The Gantz the adaptation script will be written by Marc Guggenheim with the production of Temple Hill.

Avery really broke as a director when he made a name for himself with the WWII zombie movie Suzerain. He was recently hired by Universal and James wan write and direct a new Van Helsing film for the studio and also has its action thriller Samaritan scheduled to premiere next summer.

Deadline’s report also states that the project is still in the early stages of development with no set production start date. This means that there is also no defined release window.
