Flying Lotus, the musician and director behind the 2017 horror film Kuso, has set out his next big-screen project. Deadline reports that the multi-talented artist is working on Ash, a sci-fi film about the sole survivor of a horrific incident.
Few details are available at this time, but the plot will follow a woman who “wakes up on a distant planet to find her space station crew savagely killed, her investigation into what happened setting off a chain of terrifying events”. It looks a bit like Alien, but with more existential terror – count on us! Jonni Remmler has penned the script, and casting should begin soon, for a summer production kickoff.
As on Kuso, Flying Lotus will also compose the score. Besides his solo work, he provides more and more composition work, contributing among others to the animated film Blade Runner: Black Out 2022. “I have a strong desire to innovate in the field of science fiction “, he said in a statement, “and I really want to show the world something it has never seen before.”
A four-part anthology, Kuso concerns the lives of several people mutated by the effects of an earthquake in Los Angeles. A mix of live action and animation only adds to the eerie vibe, with plenty of surreal body horror mixed into the narrative.
It’s a distinctive watch, that’s for sure, and it turned heads when it premiered at Sundance in 2017. Needless to say, we’re curious about Ash and what Flying Lotus has up its sleeve next.
