Kingdom Live-Action Movie Sequel Confirms Release Window With New Trailer

Kingdom is releasing a new live-action movie soon and has released the first trailer revealing when the new sequel will hit theaters in Japan! Yasuhira Hara’s original manga series has grown in several ways over the past few years. Although the anime’s third season was delayed due to complications from the ongoing COVID pandemic, it quickly proved to be such a hit that a fourth season is now in the works. All the while, the latest live-action effort for the franchise was also in the works.

Originally launched in Japan in April 2019 before getting an international release later that summer, it was announced the following year that director Shunsuke Sato would be returning for a new Kingdom movie which was now in the works. It’s been a while since that initial announcement, but luckily fans finally got their first look at Kingdom II: To Distant Lands. Set to hit theaters in Japan later this summer, you can check out the first trailer for the new film below:

Shunsuke Sato (who also oversaw live-action projects for Bleach, Gantz, and who is currently attached to Legendary Pictures’ My Hero Academia film) will direct the new Kingdom film and co-write the film alongside series creator Yasuhira Hara and One Piece Film: Red writer Tsutomu Kuroiwa. Yutaka Yamada will be composing the music for the new film, and the trailer confirms that the previous main trio of Kento Yamazaki, Ryo Yoshizawa, and Kanna Hashimoto all return to respectfully cover Shin, Ei Sei, and Ka Ryo Ten. This initial announcement doesn’t offer a concrete release date, however, and no confirmation of international release plans as of yet either.

Series creator Yasuhira Hara had this to say when officially announcing Kingdom II: “A sequel to the Kingdom live-action movie is in the works! Thanks to the fact that more people than we could have imagine watched the first movie, it led to the sequel. Thank you very much! I had the pleasure of being involved in the long script conference this time too. Ouki said to Shin, “Let’s make us on the battlefield.” “It’s going to be a solid representation of this world. I think people will enjoy the battlefield and drama that will remain in Japanese film history on a larger scale than the previous film. The release is still a long way off, but please everyone, I hope you’re looking forward to it.”
