Despite being one of the biggest action stars of the modern era, very familiar to hardcore fans of the genre, audiences outside of Hong Kong cinema haven’t been exposed to the undeniably talented impressive by Donnie Yen.
That’s changing as we speak, however, with the actor and martial artist recently appearing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, xXx: The Return of Alex Cageand live action Mulane remake, while next year brings the tantalizing prospect of him teaming up with Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 4.
That being said, it’s one of Yen’s more recent domestic efforts that has caused a stir on streaming, with FlixPatrol revealing last year raging fire as being about to crack Disney Plus’ top 20 most-watched movies list. Not only was it a major box office hit after earning $225 million, it also garnered critical acclaim, with legendary director Benny Chan’s last film before his passing earning a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Yen stars as Cheung Sung-bong, a veteran cop with an impressive track record for taking down the most dangerous criminals as part of the regional crime unit. He finds himself caught up in a plot for revenge when a former protege seeks to eliminate anyone he believes has wronged him, with his distinguished mentor at the top of the list.
Unmistakably and shamelessly old school, raging fire living up to its title, and then some packing a big punch, the sets and choreography more than making up for a story that brings nothing new to the table.
