The attack of the Titans

In a recent interview, the writer-director of Men broke down the impact of Hajime Isayama The attack of the Titans series had on his last film.

Talk to PolygonGarland revealed that he originally took a very different take on the horror film which sees a man seemingly swap bodies throughout his execution to terrorize a grieving woman, but the story of the Survey Corps and the Terrifying Titans made him rethink just where he wanted to take the story.

“So [Attack on Titan] hovers over this strange space between something absurd and something truly frightening. I was just really, really impressed. And I thought, on some level, that I was too – too lazy, maybe. I don’t know what the right word is. But I’m not that good, and I have to improve. So that made me re-examine Men and rethink it. That’s the nice thing about other people’s good work – it lifts everyone up a bit, you know?”

Garland also explained why he was blown away by The attack of the Titansand how watching the animated series with his daughter made him change his mind about the story of his latest horror movie:

“I was watching it with my daughter, who brought me in and said, ‘Dad, you really should watch this. I am just blown away by this show. It’s so complex on so many levels, but in Titans itself, he’s done something really interesting – he takes on human forms and makes slight changes that push things to the edge of ridiculousness, but does it with real courage and confidence.”

The attack of the Titans is famous for its creations of weird and terrifying titans, and it seems the series inspired the filmmaker to take its horror story to a darker atmosphere that fans of Isayama’s franchise are familiar with.
