Lil rel howery immerses himself in the imaginary world of Harold and the purple pencil. Deadline reports that Howery will join Zechariah Levi (Shazam!) in the live-action film based on the beloved children’s book of the same name. Twice Oscar nominated director Carlos saldanha is attached to direct.
The feature film will draw its story from Crockett johnsonThe timeless children’s book published in 1955. An immediate classic, the story follows a four-year-old boy named Harold who uses his purple pencil to shape the world around him. The original bestseller was so successful that it spawned six follow-up stories. Editorial team David Guion and Michael handelman, who have already worked together on the films Night at the Museum: Secret du Tombeau and Dinner for Schmucks, wrote the script for the live-action film.
2021 has been a busy year for Howery as he starred in the comedy feature film free guy, as well as the buddy comedy Vacation Friends. Though he shines in comedic roles, Howery is no stranger to the world of dramatic thriller, appearing in the hit Netflix film. Bird box, Jordan peelethe groundbreaking horror film by Get out, and Judas and the Black Messiah.
While Howery’s role in Harold and the purple pencil has yet to be announced, we can guess that with his background he will likely play a comedic character joining Harold on his journey. We can also expect that with Saldanha at the helm as the director, the film will be a wonderful and colorful experience. Along with his Oscar nominations for Ferdinand and Hazelnut fly, the animator and director has countless successes to his credit. Saldanha shaped the world of Ice Age with his vision as a director in three of the franchise’s films, including the first. He was also a director of 20th Century Fox Animation Rio as well as its sequel, Rio 2.
In the past, Harold’s story has been turned into a thirteen-episode series for HBO, narrated by Sharon stone, with Connor matheus expressing Harold. A hit among fans and critics, the animated series earned a Daytime Emmy Award as well as an Annie Award nomination.
Judging by the world’s love for the story of Harold and the purple pencil and the ever-growing list of stars signing up to join the production, we have no doubts that this new live-action adaptation will be a success.
