The film was directed by Claudia Llosa, from a screenplay by Llosa and Schweblin. In Netflix’s press kit for the film, Llosa recounts her reaction after reading Schweblin’s book. After the last page was done, she immediately decided that she needed to bring this film to life as a feature film.
The story takes place in the Argentinian countryside, amidst breathtaking, sunny beauty that contrasts with looming environmental disasters. “It’s a horror story at its root, but unconventional,” producer Tom Williams said. Netflix Material Continues: “The Spanish Title Rescate distance (Rescue Distance) refers to a pivotal scene in the film in which Amanda questions the time and distance it would take to save her young daughter if she faced imminent peril. The constant awareness of danger and the need to rescue is a recurring theme in the film. “
“Intellectual horror”
As the book takes place in the Argentinian countryside, Chile was actually chosen for the filming location. Specifically, in the northern part of Patagonia, where filming took place in the spring of 2019.
“It’s almost a high-end, nerdy horror movie,” producer Mark Johnson said. “But I think it’s really about two mothers trying to protect their children from an invisible evil. The only important men in the film are distraught. They have no idea what is really going on. And women have that connection with their children, but also with the land, and with (an understanding of) what’s going on in the metaphysical world.
