Every State’s Favorite Bad Romance Movie

Sometimes two distant states with seemingly little in common can connect over something surprising. For Colorado and Mississippi, that something is an affinity with the 2006 teen romantic comedy John Tucker must die.

Based on Google Trends data analyzed by jewelry retailer Shane Co., residents of Colorado and Mississippi are searching for this movie more than any other bad romance movie. In this case, wrong means “has an IMDb rating of 6.1 or less”. Meanwhile, Kentucky, Maryland and Washington can’t get enough of Adrian Grenier and Melissa Joan Hart’s 1999 film drive me crazy, which also gave us the Britney Spears classic “(You Drive Me) Crazy.”

Other states are on their own in their silver-screen guilty pleasures. Arkansas loves the 2007s Because I said so, with Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore; Rhode Island has a soft spot for Tom Cruise’s 1988 flop Cocktail; and Missouri never forgot that of Garry Marshall Valentine’s day, the only film in which you can see then-couple Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner portraying a couple (or portraying anyone – their partnership unfortunately didn’t spawn more movie roles).

An impressive number of nine states agree that the years 2011 something borrowed, in which romance threatens the best friendship of two women (played by Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin), is worth watching. Four, from Hawaii to Michigan, prefer the 2009s couple retreat; and three others (Florida, Nebraska and Tennessee) challenge the idea that the 2000s ugly coyote is nothing less than a national treasure.
