Clamp’s beloved supernatural manga series will be adapted into a live-action film, which will star Ryunosuke Kamiki from Your Name.
Clamp’s xxxHOLiC returns as a new live-action movie.
As reported by Comic Natalie, the new film was announced on November 20 by Japanese film studios Shochiku and Asmik Ace. The first frame of the film shows its two protagonists, Ryunosuke Kamiki and Ko Shibasaki, in full costume as the protagonists of xxxHOLiC, respectively Kimihiro Watanuki and Yuko Ichihara. Kamiki is a popular Japanese actor who has previously appeared in live-action adaptations of Mars is coming like a lion and Jojo’s bizarre adventure: the diamond is unbreakable, but anime fans may know him best for providing the voice of your namethe main male role, Taki. Shibasaki has also worked both as a live actor and as an anime voice actor; in addition to appearing in live reimaginations of Dororo and Black jack, she starred in one of the Detective Conan animated films and 2021 Month of the Kamiari Child.
The film will be directed by Mika Ninagawa, who previously directed the Netflix original series, Followers. The screenplay for the film will be written by Erika Yoshida, who previously worked on Lupine the Third: Part IV and the animated adaptation of manhua Tower of God. The film is scheduled to premiere in Japan on April 29. An international release for the film has yet to be announced.
xxxHOLiC was originally a manga series created by Clamp, a collective of all-female manga artists who are also known to have created the popular magical anime girl Sakura card sensor and the fantastic crossover series Tsubasa: Chronicle of the reservoir. The story released its first chapter in 2003 and was one of the most popular manga titles of the early 2000s, with The New York Times Ranking it as the sixth best-selling manga of 2009. The series tells the story of Kimihiro Watanuki, a high school student who was cursed with the ability to see ghosts and other spirits. Kimihiro enlists the help of a witch, Yuko Ichihara, who agrees to relieve him of his supernatural vision, on the condition that he works for her as an assistant in her wish-granting business. xxxHOLiC has been widely acclaimed for its stylized artistry, the episodic nature of its storytelling, and its melancholy themes.
The series was adapted into an anime by Ghost in the shell Production studio IG in 2006. The new film will be the third live-action adaptation of the Clamp manga: the first, an 8-episode miniseries, aired in 2012. An all-male stage adaptation was also produced, which was premiered in Japan earlier this year.
