Liam Neeson starred in Clash of the Titans, which had a ridiculously huge cast, as dumb as the movie was. This ridiculous fantasy film has left many scratching their heads, especially since it was supposed to be a better reboot of the classic 1981 film. a classic tale.
Clash of the Titans holds a low 27% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an almost equally terrible audience approval rating of 40%. The film would go on to gross a surprising amount of money at the box office, grossing $493 million at the worldwide box office, leading to a sequel called Wrath of the Titans. Liam Neeson would also reprise his role as Zeus for the sequel.
Clash of the Titans follows Perseus, a demigod born to Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Danae. Perseus is lost at sea after Danae’s husband (King Acrisius) discovers she has been impregnated by Zeus and throws the newborn baby into a chest. Perseus is raised by a fisherman and his wife before Zeus destroys their ship, leaving everyone dead by Perseus.
Perseus is then taken before King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia, who have waged war on the gods. They celebrate their rebellion when Hades appears and reveals Perseus’ true lineage. Hades then threatens to release the Kraken unless Cepheus and Cassiopeia’s daughter is sacrificed to appease the gods.
Without going too far into the plot of the film, it is now streaming on Netflix. As mentioned earlier, the film had a ridiculously good cast, although it was mostly criticized. Sam Worthington, Mads Mikkelsen, Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos join Liam Neeson as Zeus. This huge cast likely led to the high box office draw, as the film was not well-reviewed by critics or audiences.
One of the biggest issues for most people is that Ralph Fiennes seemed to be impersonating his voice for Voldemort as Zeus. To be fair, he was fully immersed in the role of Voldemort at the time, as he had been in two Harry Potter films before. Clash of the Titans was out. That’s no excuse, because Fiennes should have been able to tell the difference between the two roles.
Clash of the Titans was just a weird movie packed with action but containing weird moments. Sam Worthington as Perseus was fine, but he was untrained and loose for most of the film until he defeated Medusa and then learned to fight immediately afterwards. We know that Zeus (Liam Neeson) is his father, but that was just a weird transition.
Even though the original Clash of the Titans is obsolete, we had a much better idea of the heroic journey Perseus is pursuing. The 2010 remake was just trying to put expensive wrapping on a movie that just wasn’t that great, despite a massive cast that included Mads Mikkelsen, Ralph Fiennes, and Liam Neeson. The 2010 version of Clash of the Titans was just one of many reboots that Hollywood was enthralled with.
Although Clash of the Titans was a critical failure, it made a ton of money at the box office, as mentioned earlier. This led to the Wrath of the Titans sequel film, which brought back Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson. Again, the sequel would go on to do well at the box office, grossing $302 in ticket sales worldwide.
However Wrath of the Titans was also considered a success, the third film in the trilogy would not take place. He was supposed to be called Revenge of the Titans, but due to criticism from the first two films, it was ultimately dropped. We may have seen Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes return one last time, but now we’ll never know.
Clash of the Titans is streaming on Netflix right now, and we always say it’s best to watch a movie and decide for yourself if it’s as terrible as the reviews and people say it is. In his defense, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes make a hell of a combination that you should at least get to know once. Check out the movie now and see if it’s a faithful reboot.
